82 380 sl hard start
Hi all, I've been having an intermitten hard start that has gotten progressively worst. The car starts with no problems in the morning (garage kept), but if I park for a while and then try to start it takes about 5 cranks before starting up.
Also, I've noticed that it leaves a dark smoke spot in the driveway, and that there's moisture coming out of the exhaust. Any ideas??? Also, can anyone recommend a good mechanic in Austin, Texas. Thanks. |

It may be your fuel injectors, they tend to leak over time.

I think you're right. Just found this on: overniteautoparts.com....
"Most people don't ever think of Mercedes fuel injectors as a Mercedes 380SL replacement part. Chances are your Mercedes 380SL fuel injector cannot be cleaned like some cleaning fluid products say. Most Mercedes fuel injector has internal springs and seals that fail causing the Mercedes injector to not operate properly. This problem cannot be solved by simply cleaning them and need to be replaced. We recommend Mercedes 380SL fuel injector replacement every 100,000 miles. If you are in this mileage window or your Mercedes 380SL fuel injectors are causing you to have hard starting, running rough, or leaking fuel, then find your Mercedes " Thanks. Still need a good mechanic in Austin, Texas area. |

As far as Austin shops, I've used Phoenix Motor Works on W. 6th St several times and have been happy. Their service writers are very customer oriented. I've taken my SL in there maybe 4 times.
A place that gets high praises, but I have yet to use is Ben's Workshop on W. 5th St. I've driven by the facility and looked at their website and I'll probably take my next job to them. There's also German Auto Center, near Burnet and Ohlen. I was in there a couple of times looking at an SL that one of their customers was selling. I didn't have a good feeling about them, but that may just have been part of the car buying experience. There's also a place at Burnet and Braker called something like European Import Specialists. I've never used them and don't know anyone who has, but they sure have a lot of Mercedes, BMW, and VW cars all the time. Hope that helps.

Yes, I read a couple of similiar posting regarding warm starts, where the accumulator was suggested as being the problem.
Guess, I'll go ahead with the fuel injectors first, since my car has 114,000 miles. If that doesn't work, then I'll know what to look at next. UGH, the price of keeping up my "pride and joy"! Thanks all! |

MZMERC,
I have the same exact problem with my 1985 380sl. I can't absolutely state that it only hapens when warm but that at best it is intermittent. However, my car has 55k miles so I'm not near the mileage "window" for the injectors...but you never know. Best price on injectors or accumulator? Regards

I'd like to say thanks to all!!!! After troubleshooting my SL problem on this forum, I was pointed in the right direction.
I'm happy to say that I had the fuel accumulator replaced, and my car is starting right up!!! I'm even getting better gas mileage!!! Thanks again, MzMerc |
