Has this happened to you? Spectators.

I went to a local ferry terminal and left my brand new 250sl
in the parking lot. Top down, sunny day, you know. (Ok,
it isn't brand new, but hey!)
An older gentleman was walking along and he just stopped
and stared at my car. He didn't move for a long while. He
then moved to each corner to stare some more. It was like
my car mesmorized him. He must have had one or wanted
one back in the 60's.

New story: I parked in a lot far away from the crowds so no
one would walk past the car. As I'm in the store, I notice
that everyone seems to walk past my car anyway. No one
touched it, but still, there was a stream of people going by.

Are these typical stories for you as well?

If I saw your car,I would look also.

I remember when I was in high school, the Dean of Girls had a 280SL (might have been 250SL). This was the first SL I was able to get close to. Now, when I see a 280SL, it brings back memories.

Yes, I would stand by your car and stare for at least 10 minutes. If you came up to the car, we would talk for at least another 10 minutes.

So would I; love my 560SL but damn, those Pagodas are special cars.

Not long after my dad bought his first MB--a new 280SEL in '69--he was parked downtown in his Midwest home town. Came back to find a couple of old retired farmers in their overalls looking the car over at length from the sidewalk, thumbs hooked into suspenders all around. That big MB grille, after all, looked pretty unusual in 1969 in the GM-powered world of Saginaw, MI.

The comment of one to the other: "Had an old Ford that looked like that once." Just kind of appealed to Dad's sense of humor!

The 230/250/280 SLs are remarkably satisfying to look at. Mine have regularly gotten comments over the years. On one occasion my white SL even got a kiss! It was from a blonde who was walking past the front of the car, bent over, and planted one right on the hood badge. I was working in a fast-food resaturant at the time and watched it go down from the drive-thru window.
