Front Speakers for 450SL
I'm replacing the blown front speakers in my 75 450SL.
I believe that the biggest speaker that would fit in the dash space is 4". What recommendations do you have for current speakers. So far, I've found the options of: -MB Quart Discus 4" DKD 110s for $65 -Infinity Kappa 42.5i 4" for $62 Can anyone speak to which of these would work or another kind that would be better? Thanks! One recommendation
4" speakers won't fit in the front without cutting some of the dash support away or some of the speaker away. 3.5" is what's in there now, and the extra .5" isn't worth the hassle. I like these for the front:
- http://www.sfxaudio.com/products/dispItem.asp?ProdId=30401 To get full sound, you need to add rear speakers. 6"x9" is the practical limit for the carpeted deck behind the seats, and these are nice: - http://www.sounddomain.com/sku/INFKAPPA6925I No financial kickback from either company or website; YMMV. |

Speakers!
Try Crutchfield or Performance Parts. Performance sells an exact replacement. You have to look or call Crutchfield to get exact fit. Crutchfield is the best for a DIY!

replace speakers in 450sl (1977)
If you still have oiriginal radio (becker-mexico) you will not get better response from expensive speakers. I replaced radio and used radio shack standard, plays decently. good luck Abe G

Speakers!!!!!
I stand corrected. My Son tells me that neither Crutchfield or Performance sells the 3.5 inch speaker any longer! Sorry, I misled you!

I put the Kappas in my SL. As Doc said, I had to grind away the metal between the "ears" where the screws go to make them fit using the original speakers as a template. It an hour or so - not stressful, nice to have clean sounding music again.

Which BA speakers did you use? Are they Full Range, 2 way or 3 way?
Any other speaker ideas are welcome. Also, any tips on removing the Becker radio?

removing becker radio
To Ric: On my 77 450sl I removed becker-mexico this way. 1) remove glove box liner, on left behind radip 2 round nuts, loosen same held to bracket. 2) look for amplifier should hook on side, lift up and remove with radio. Good luck, Abe G ps I think old becker radios stink! Waste of money to repair (as I did)
