Can soft top windows in a '95 SL500 be replaced???

I've managed to tear the center window and one of the side windows in my SL500. Can they be replaced or am I looking at needing to get a new top?

I've got an older 450SL and was told that it's almost as expensive to replace the windows as it was to replace the top on that car.

If I have to replace the top in the SL500 how much should I expect to pay for it?

Thanks
-mick

When our rear window "split" the rear quarter section was the only replacement necessary.

The rear quarter section consists of the three windows...goes for about $350. Don't know what it would cost for labor, as our repair was mostly covered by MB...I was out $340...

According to Mercedes Enthusiast March issue, they recommended to replace the entire top. The new section may be darker in color, and the old section will eventually worn and need replacing sometime down the road. If you do it all at once, it saves in the long run. I am no expert on the subject, just pass on what I read in the magazine.

Any convertable "top shop" should be able to replace your plastic "windows". Check the yellow pages. But as stated above, and in my experience, the top shop wanted nearly as much to replace the plastic as an entirely new top would cost. Check out www.hirschauto.com for the price of a new top. Tod

$350 does seem to be about the going rate for replacement windows. So I don't think you paid too much. I'm curious; did they take the top off to do the work, or did they sew in place? When I got an estimate for windows, they said the cost was mostly for removing and re-installing the canvas. That's why a whole new top was quoted to me at $500. Tod

I wish you were near New England. I have a shop that has done work for my cousin (has auto dealers) before. He will install my top parts and labor, out the door for $850. This is for an OEM top, I made sure to be quite specific about that. Im going to install it in a month or so as my rear window is very fogged up and the stitching has come quite loose.

The rear windows respond very well to cleaning with a mild soap solution. Mine were very opaque when I got the car; a quicj wash and they're fine, albeit a bit scratched. I intend to try Meguiars PlasticX to clean up even further. There are a number of restorative products advertised in the back of classic car pages.

Might be worth a try before shelling out $$?

Ive tried Mcguiers plasticX as well as their #17 clear plastic cleaner. It is supposed to work wonders on clear plastic. My results were mediocre. The plastic cleaned up OK, now instead of unviewable opaque I can see out of them, but still very opaque, and can only see lights at night.
