After I first started this thread, it became quickly apparent that you either understand the "SL Thing", or you don't. The point was driven home this weekend. My younger brother was visiting (that's him in the 450SL), and it was another beautiful day for some top-down driving. We both have sons who are ready to drive (mine gets his permit this week), so we decided to take the boys out for a spin. We switched cars at the halfway point. The result, the two teenagers AND my 40-year old brother all liked the Mazda better than the SL. Personally, I think that's close to blasphamy, and am questioning if I've failed as a Father! The Mazda's going to my kid, but I'm still working on him to see if I can get him to appreciate the quality and craftsmanship of MB. I hope to convince him that a nice, clean 190 would be a great first car.

Been there. I tried, VERY HARD, to convince my son to put his 1/2 of the money towards his car to a 71 280SL( we split the cost of purchasing the car, but he paid for all repairs). I would maintain it. I would help him with it. But he could never get rid of it. If he wanted the money out of it I would buy him out. He would have a 71 280SL to drive as long as he wants. I figured I could appreciate it too. You know, get to drive it and love it along with him. And I quote "DAD, THAT'S YOUR IDEA OF A SPORTS CAR, NOT MINE". WHAT KIND OF MAN HAVE I RAISED, in this house of Mercedes!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Actually he wanted a Porsche 911. I must of had this tremendous look of disapointment on my face. Rats, couldn't weasel another SL out of him. Figured the wife couldn't object to having 2 SL's if one was really my sons. Actually the wife is great, she loves the older model cars. Especially the 280SE Cabrio. I can see one of those in our future. So we spent 2 years completely rebuilding a 65 Mustang Fastback. Dave PS One thing I will add to this post. I had a wise old Captain I flew with as a new Flight Engineer at American. He explained what he did with his sons about cars. He let them buy a car that they loved but needed work. He helped them repair it. After they did all that work on the car, they DID NOT want to wreck it. 5 years ago I flew with his son as my copilot. I asked him about it. He agreed. He had put to much time and effort into the car he did not want to wreck it. I see the pride my son has in his Mustang. I know he plays with it. But I also know he's careful with it.

My son thinks the Merc is rather nice, but would prefer a Jaguar E-Type!

Nothing like having the top down and and cruzing on the highway and have some one in a Mustang/Camaro pull behind you and act like your going toooo slow(70-80 usually). Well here is what I like to do.
Step 1, slow it down to about 55 and get the person more pissed. Step 2, hit the gas and watch them disappear from your rear view mirror. Step 3, Lay off the gas at 120-130 and see how long it takes for them to try to pull up on your bumper like an old person diving a non-sports car that won't go fast. Step 4, laugh when they finally catch up but don't have the guts to pass you. |

I usually ...
...skip #(1) - I see no sense in annoying driver already behind me.
I just lay down the gas and see how quickly I can put some distance between him and me. I do this to (1) put myself out of harm's way and (2) impress on him/her that I have one fast car. I'll slow down to prior cruising speed after I have made my point and I will move out of the passing lane in case he/she wants to use it. Usually they just hang back and admire the SL! 97 sl500 triple black sport pkg 1 27k miles |
