Identify year of manufacture? 500SL

Hi all

I'm petty sure that I can indent the year of manufacture (and therefore exact engine type) by the VIN number - anyone know which character it is or of an on-line service?

Ah - so according to the the ISO standard the 10th digit is the year of manufacturer! Shame my merc's 10th is a numerial and ISO says it should be a character :-(
