Problems with Windscreen
I bought a winscreen for my 450 SL from Performance Products. Windscreen will not stay at the 90 degree position but wants to go past that to about a 120 degree position and "lock in" there. It's almost touching the back of my headrests! I called and talked to them 3 times this past week trying to get an answer on what to do or if this was the way the screen was "supposed" to be. They have told me each time that they would find out and get back to me. I'm still waiting!!! For those of you who have the windscreens, does your's work the same way??
Thanks, Mike |

That's correct.
The windscreen in my '91 500 SL goes well past 90 degrees. For what its worth, I'm very UNIMPRESSED with Performance Products. I emailed them several times trying to order a product and never got a reply other than their automated email saying they would reply shortly. That was weeks ago. |

My windscreen leans forward maybe 20 degrees or so at full in-place position; actually, at that angle it works a bit better than at the perpendicular.
Ordered several times from Performance without problems, and including one return/exchange that went off without a hitch; but I can say I've not had to work on anything complex, just accessory stuff.

The wind deflector in my 99 SL500 leans forward at (about) 120 degrees to the horizontal. My friend's 81 500SL was the same.

OK...if that's the way it's "supposed" to be then I will accept it. But it sure works much better in the straight up (90 degree) angle!! Had some time yesterday and decided to fix the problem. I drilled 2 small holes is the bottom bar of the actual windscreen and inserted 2 black screws into it. This keeps the bar from rotating past the 90 degree position as the heads of the screw actually "hit" the bottom support bar. I can screw in or out the screws to adjust where the screen stands. Works very well and you would never know that they weren't supposed to be there!!!
I can't believe that for $300 this thing can't be adjusted or set in different positions!!! Mike |

Have to agree that it seems pretty simple and easy to make for the price; a well-done friction-stabilized hinge would seem to be a reasonable expectation.
OTOH, I can easily reach back to flip it up getting on the freeway and back down for slower speed breeze.

I find it works better in that position than does flipping up the rollbar (short of 90 degrees) if I'm in a situation where reaching back is too dangerous.
My assumption would be that it has been wind tunnel tested and found to work best in the advanced position hence no adjustability. Some feel they don't work all that well, I notice an amazing difference. To each their own. |

I too can tell a big difference with the windscreen since I installed it. It just works better at the straight up position and it looks "right" when it's straight up! Don't get me wrong...I'm glad that I bought it, I just wish that it was adjustable.
