1990 300SL 1st gear start

My wifes 1990 300SL does not always start in 1st gear from a dead stop, even if you floor it. This makes it a real DOG when the A/C in on. It seems to have a mind of its own as to what gear it will start with. Everything else is fine with this transmission. Can the external adjustments on this transmission correct this problem?
I have a 1992 300CE that always starts in 1st but the trans does not have the overdrive gear like the 300SL. Thanks in advance for your advice. Craig

I was recently in contact with bergwerks about the 1st gear start modification kit they sell for the 500SL. They have never installed it on a 300SL and therefore don't know if it is applicable to that transmission. I have a 300 SL ( of course ) and I've found that the transmission will always start in 1st if for instance; while stopped at light, with your foot on the brake, move the shift lever down to "2" and then back to 4 or D. When you take your foot off the brake and step on the gas, the car will be in 1st gear and upshift after that as usual. Since you need to do this everytime, it is a really PITA. But when you really need to start quickly, it does work. Tod

There's always the valve body modification, which I know works for the 500SL, not sure about the 300SL. But, I'm sure if you get a capable and knowledgeable transmission mechanic, he can figure it out. I have such a person here in Jersey who charges about $300 to do it, but instead, I adjusted the kickdown cable a little bit, and the car seems to respond much earlier to the throttle and I'm happy enough for now.

I know my car feels a little slow just off the line in second (but it's a beast in first), I can imagine the frustration in the 6 cylinder models.

I hope this helps. Eli.
