Replacing door weatherstrip ,sort of....

On my '86 560sl the weatherstrip on the drivers side (that runs up the the edge of the windshield frame and comes in contact with the door). Whew,I hope I described this right. Needs to be replaced. Is this a difficult job? Can it be done by a non mechanic? Does this have to be an OEM piece ? I have seen aftermarket pieces costing around $30.
Thanks to all.
Larry

When I bought my '80 450sl a year and a half ago, I needed to have all the weatherstrips replaced. I had an upholstry shop do all of them, including the one that runs up the windshield. Got a new top put on at the same time. Sorry, I know this doesn't help you. I figured that I could handle the ones on the hard top, but taking the doors apart and such was beyond me. LOL. BOB

Larry, I think you're talking about the pillar post seal. I haven't replaced mine yet, though I've already bought the new seal. I've heard that it's moderately difficult, but the service manual makes it sound easy.

I'd be wary of aftermarket seals. I read an article about them once, but I can't seem to find it now.

I bought all my seals from a guy in CA. Some were aftermarket and some original. There seemed to be NO difference in the quality and appearance, but the A-M's were about a third of the price. I think you are correct, maheath, that Larry is talking about the pillar post , and the guys in the shop that replaced mine said they were a *****. Best of luck. BOB
