Well I'm new here, kinda been outta cars for years. Just picked up a 90 SL500, 48k miles really clean. And just putting it away for the winter now, bummer.
I'm sure I'll have a bumch of questions etc.

Let's see if I can get the pic here, the car is almost spotless. I can count the scatches and dings on my fingers.
This was before I cleaned it and gave it a proper wax.

Couldn't get the pic to work, try the above link.

hey, to post a pic, just click the IMG button above the text box, and past the url of your pic. Here's yours in case you still can't get it to work.

Ken

I see you have upgraded your headlights, indicators and side lights to post 95, but did you change the rear clusters to match or go the whole hog to 99 where they got significantly softer looking too?

Can you post a pic if you did as I would like to see the 99 rears on a car with the elder body kit - just to see if they are in keeping.

Cheers
Lea

Thanks Bob, it was late and I was slow.

You'd think after 35 years working on computers I'd know better. But I don't deal with web stuff alot, I do more infrastucture and DB work.

Lea,
The front bits were on the car when I bought it. With lights at around NZ$4000 (GBP 1800, US$2300) EACH, I wouldn't have done it myself. Rarely drive the SL at night.

I didn't upgrade the back, but here's a photo of the rear anyway. I had the chance to upgrade the lower valance (sides only) to the 2-hole look, but as I had already painted the bottom all round I decided I didn't need it.

To me the whole upgrade business for no reason other than looks is an expensive luxury - it's still a '93 - I'd rather spend it on a newer SL!

Hi

I have a 1990 300SL. I have done a cheap upgrade to my orange indicators at the rear. I initially bought the 1996 onward rear lights (red indicators) and then realised that they were IDENTICAL to my original ones bar the colour of the indicators.

I returned them and sprayed the orange indicators with special red lens paint that you can buy from Halfords (a UK motor accessory store) for £12. The result is quite good and better than spending £150 on new lights. One needs to put more than one coat on, but do not over do it otherwise the indicator will actually show red. Also I recommend masking off the bits you do not need spraying.

I must say that the car looks a lot more modern with the red indicators, particularly on a silver car.

Regards.

Arfan

better picture?

I wish I could post larger and clearer pictures, but they're always too large for the 66K limit. When I resize them downward they look like low resolution wallet sized pictures! How do you guys post such great pictures? I'm using the HP 1 mp camera. Do I need a better one?

Ken, what a lovely example of a true black - and with an amazing shine! When I was looking for mine I saw a 'blue black' and thought it looked 'dirty', and I could tell it was freshly polished! I decided against black at that point - but yours looks gorgeous.

As for lights - apart from xenons it's not too expensive. Rears are around 160GBP, fronts and side lights 100GBP - so all in all, not too bad. I think I'm soon to treat myself - but with Twins on the way I guess I'm gonna have to be a little more careful with the cash flow from now on !!

Arfan,
You've got me thinking now! Yes, all red rears would look more modern in the way that the clear fronts improve the SL. I'm going to check to see if red indicators are legal here.

Reading your comments again makes me think that you painted yours red but still got orange indicating. How can this be?

flixbix,

My Canon Powershot is only a 2Mb and that's plenty. I shoot at 600x800 which is one of the lower resolutions, and I'd probably get the same results as your 1Mb.

The secret is in the manipulation. I usually put mine into Adobe Photoshop (Lite) and do 2 things to them:

1) Use the sharpen filter to crisp up the shot. Generally a one step sharpen makes an amazing difference.

2) Save them as JPEGs at a lower resolution. Even saving at 2 or 3 on the scale of 10 produces little discernable difference in quality for internet viewing, but dropped the size in one case from 105kb to below the 66kb limit.

You only need high res shots for paper prints. That's why manufacturers sell 5Mb-and-up cameras. 1Mb is more than enough for the net.

Hope that helps you.

Thanks Lea,
I've lusted after a black SL for some time, knowing that this colour shows the best shine. Despite all the naysayers who said it would be impossible to keep clean, I've proved them wrong. (Though they don't see me detailing it after every run, nor keeping it inside from the rain!)

It's officially a 'green-black,' though shows as a gray-black - just to confuse me even more. There's no hint of green in it anywhere and I suspect the 'expert' that told me this was colourblind on the day.

This element of gray makes it look a little less exciting in bright sunlight than the pure 040 black which is now my goal for the next SL

I use Photo Deluxe 4.0
When I save the picture as a JPEG I resize the picture. But I resize it to a 640 pixel by (whatever size the pictures ratio give it) 480 pixel.
Get a photo manipulation program. Adjust the size but instead of inches X inches, do pixel X pixel and make the top demension 640pixels. Then change the side dimension to pixels, it will know what amout of pixels to use based on the photo you are saving.
The 2 meg picture you have will now turn out to a 45-60K size photo.
