Wind deflector positions
I'm looking at buying a windscreen for my R129, but have been put off by the *temporary* add-on look of the ones available. Even though they are well crafted and fit nicely on the rollbar, they always look like an afterthought.
From some posts it seems that the deflector has to lean towards the driver/passenger for best effect. But I wonder if it is almost as good at the same angle as the rollbar? If so, and it still stopped wind, then I could whip up a nice design to fit inside the rollbar and it would look neat and more part of the car. Has anyone used one closed on the rollbar, with the rollbar up? What's it like at stopping wind in this position? Based on my experience with the one on my 560SL, I'd say that the angle isn't very critical as long as it's fairly near perpendicular. However, mine also closes off the space between itself and the back of the cockpit so there's no air blowing around under it, and I suspect that's a significant piece of the effect.

Hi Ken, I use the wind deflector with the roll bar up with the screen attached and the other half of the screen down. This really stops most of the wind. With the windows up and the heat on, you are really comfortable on a cool Fall evening. During the Day on a nice drive on the highway the wind screen also is great, again stopping most of the air twirlling around in the cabin. It took me awhile to use the screen on a regular basis, but once you get used to it, it's great.

Ken, I love my windscreen, especially on the highway.
I raise mine by hand, that way it protects anything behind your seat from flying out. I can reach it without turning around. The problem with putting up the rollbar is that it results in very little visibility given that you are looking through a double screen. It's a forward leaning L if you raise it by hand.

Thanks guys, I'm learning more about deflectors as we go along.
From the plexiglass wind baffle site (www.windbaffle.com) it seems that the majority of the backdraft curls over the top of the SL front window ('window' to distinguish that from 'windscreen' which makes descriptions all very confusing!) I thought the wind came from the sides of the car and rolled round the back, rather like the vortexes on an aircraft wing. So, now I know where the draft/draught comes from, the standard MB wind deflector design operated with the roll bar down keeps most of the wind out, and is an effective design because of that. But it still looks temporary to me. I'd like to see it integrated into the roll bar. Wonder why no-one's done that? Another question - has anyone found their deflector work as effectively with the side windows down? Ken (century poster!) On my 107, the deflector works very nicely with the side windows down; it turns 75-80 mph speeds into about 35-40 equivalent in terms of wind blast and buffeting, and makes it truly pleasant to be on freeways with the top down. On a nice warm day, I'll flip it up as I get on the freeway and off when I leave. I love the open car, but an hour or so of the noise and buffeting at full highway speed isn't that attractive--and the ringing in my middle-aged male's ears afterwards tells me that I need to be smarter. The screen fixes that.
With the side windows up and the windscreen up, it's only mildly more windy than in a closed car with the sunroof open; I use this configuration when it's too chilly otherwise. Even my cold-intolerant wife was comfy on a 55-degree evening in this configuration with a bit of heat.

The only way the wind deflector works is with the roll bar DOWN and the deflector extended like in the photo below. I see people running around in their SL's with the roll bar up, which looks good from the outside, but 1) Kills most rear view visibility and 2) The wind screen does not work at ALL. At least on R129's!
