Bringing in an SL from another state

What year were SLs allowed to be brought into Calif. without any special paperwork or smog modifications? I am interested in purchasing an SL, but the ones I have seen are out of state and I would like to bring one in, price is right of course, without having to worry about any state or government regulations.
Thanks

In the 60s.

No but seriously I would check with the CA DMV first; before you take anybodys word on it.

Not clear if you're talking old SL or newer SL. I think CA has desmogged everything 1973 and before. As far as newer cars go, CA used to charge a fee, a few hundred dollars, for bringing in a non-CA car. But the Feds made them stop doing it and they had to give all the money back - presumably some kind of an interstate commerce issue. But I agree, check with the DMV - they have a good web site.

Thanks, I am thinking about '97 or newer, where ever the best price is.

By 1997 I'm pretty sure the cars all met 50 state emission standards, even the Diesels, i wouldn't worry about a gasser, but I'd also recommend checking with someone at the DMV in California.
