first sighting of an sl
Greeting from Oklahoma, home of the #1 football team in the nation. Have you seen them play? Awesome and scary are the key words to describe them. Anyway on to my tread. I think it would be fun to remember the first sighting you had of a sl and what you thought.
Mine was at Shangr-La resort on Monkey Island, Grand Lake in Oklahoma. I was working on the front desk at the time it was the spring of 1977 and the owner of the lodge, Charles Davis, pulled up and came inside and asked us to come outside and see his new car. It was so cool to see the most beautiful car I have ever seen. It was a gold color with tan interior. Seeing the car with the beautiful background of Grand Lake was something I will bever forget. I never dreamed I would someday own one. I have had my 560 now for just over 3 weeks and was lucky to have the week off after I bought her, I put over 600 miles on her the first week. I am going to try and take photos this afternoon and post soon. Hope everyone has a great Sunday and looking forward to hearing about their first sightning. |

I have no recollection of my first sighting - can barely remember the most recent one. But that aside, just think.... some day you're going to be able to look back just as fondly at 2003 - as the year you bought your first SL and the year that OU was the number 1 team in the country, for part of the season.

That's easy. My Dad used to take me to the N.Y. Auto Show in the old Convention Center, Columbus Circle at 59th St. I was probably 8-10 years old when I saw and fell in love with my first SL. That would have been mid sixties, so that would have made it perhaps the 113 body style (230-280SL). I knew I'd someday own one, just never dreamt that it would take 40 years!

My Dad took me along one day to the local MB dealership to get his car serviced. I was 17 at the time.
I fell in love with a silver 1976 450SL in the showroom. It had black leather seats, and I remember stepping into the car and gripping the wheel, imagining what it would feel like driving this car on a regular basis...I also imagined a world of improvement to my pathetic love life! The R129 really belongs to my wife, but one day, I will get myself an old R107 and restore it to health!
