If you can wedge the 2x4 between the passenger seat back by carefully adjusting the seat this can help hold it in place until the glue sets. Another option is to remove the piece of wood that you are going to repair, then use 3M adhesive remover to get rid of all the old adhesive on the aluminum part, then glue and clamp the wood to the aluminum using binder clips, then finally glue the repaired piece to the dash, holding it with the blue 3M tape and/or your 2x4 brace. The advantage to the thicker glue from a hot melt glue gun or the Superglue gel that Brian recommended (which I have not personally tried but it sounds good) is that it won't run onto the dash or ooze onto the wood.

If you don't see clean aluminum, I'll bet there is still some old glue sticking to it. It's a yellowish brown color if I recall. I just wanted to get it off the aluminum piece so the wood wouldn't appear too thick.

I used contact cement to replace wood dash trim. All the wood on the consol and ash tray appeared to be ruined-- all cracked-- but the cracking was in the thick epoxy fininsh. I removed the old finish with a heat gun and CAREFULLY scraped it off with a putty knife, sanded lightly, and put on new finish. Looks great. Be very careful with the scraping, this is a laminated wood, subject to splintering, and gouging. Round off corners of putty knife with a file first. Good luck, Dusty

Dusty -- can you give us more details on how you removed the finish from your wood and what you refinished it with? My '83 300SD has the same "cracked" wood you describe and I've been trying to remove the finish. That stuff lasted 17+ years and it is still hard as hell to get off of the wood!!

I assume you "preheated" the finish a little before scraping? Did you go over the wood in one pass or take off a thin layer at a time? I know the corners were rounded off the putty knife, but was the edge of the knife sharp or dull? What did you use to refinish the wood??

Thanks!

Neal
