450SL Injector
I have a miss on my 450 SL, had my mechanic (not an expert on MB) take a look at it. He replaced the cap, rotor, plugs, wires, and fuel filter. The car has a relatively new fuel pump on it (less than a year old). None of the above took care of the problem. My mechanic thinks I have a bad injector and this is the cause of the miss. My questions are:
1)Does this sound like a bad injector? 2)How much should a new injector plus labor cost me? 3)Anybody in the Central California area (Fresno) know of a good MB shop? I also dumped a can of fuel injector cleaner in the tank but that failed to solve my problem as well. Thanks,

Is it a constant miss at any RPM, or only at idle?
There are a lot of posts on isolating a bad injector. One way is to loosen (and tighten) the connections on the fuel distributor one by one. Each good injector will lose pressure and cause the idle to go rougher. When you get to the one that doesn't change the idle, you've found the problem cylinder. You may, however, have a miss caused by a vacuum leak, which is common as the injector seals dry out and fail to seal. You can spray some carb cleaner around the injectors, and if the idle gets better momentarily, there's the bad cylinder. With all that said, though, it might be a good idea to simply replace all the injectors and seals almost as preventative maintenance unless you know their age and condition. You can buy new injectors, holders, and seals on FastLane or Buymbparts for about $28 per cylinder and it's a very satisfying wrench to install them. To me, this makes more sense than paying for an hour or two of diagnostic time. Finally, you may have a problem with the mixture or idle control system - that's why I asked if it was just at idle.

Thanks for the information Chuck.
It has the miss at all speeds, all RPM's.

Then it is probably a single dead injector, an outside chance of a fuel distributor problem.
Good luck.

It was an injector, but the mechanic didn't even need to replace it, he was able to clean it out, and the car runs great again. $65 out the door, best deal I ever got!
