Bobk, you'll love the R129 after your R107... the difference everywhere is huge! But everyone seems to agree the SL600 is too heavy up front for good handling. But then, that turbine smooth response...

---

I'm fretting again.

Watched a British tv program last night - "5th Gear." They were comparing half a dozen upmarket sportsters, ranging from a Honda S200 to an Lotus Eloise, a TVR, even a Boxster.

The Boxster won. But my gripe - there was no SLK in the mix! Unbelievable! The perfect car for this small car convertible test - the SLK - was not even mentioned in passing.

What is it with these guys! Or our cars? I'll be grumpy all day now that I've bought an SLK for my wife and I might have to tell her that it is the dark horse of the motoring community.

KenSilver,
Look at it on the bright side. The less you see on TV or magazines, the more the shocking value in real life

Hope no one on the SLK forum sees this but I really don't see the SLK as being special performance wise at all.

Boxsters are special, no doubt.

Except the AMG SLK32. Or the next generation SLK 350 with 268bph and 258lb/ft of torque. They should give Boxster a run of the money.

elau,
No truer word said in jest!

CDNC36AMG,
OK, I agree it's just a little 4 cylinder girl's car. But why the media cold-shoulder for a car that I have read as 'the top selling car of its class.' Maybe that 'class' is every other folding metal roof 4 cyclinder vehicle... like, none.

I'm not that disappointed anyhow... all SL's exude a quality that transcends all boundaries (whatever that means )

The SLK is a brilliant car. My mother has had her 2000 SLK230k since new (just over 4 years ago). She uses it every day and has put about 50k miles on it. Everyone in the family is of the view that it is the best car we have ever owned. It hasn't depreciated much. It has been cheap to run, maintain and insure. It has never missed a beat. It is very safe (I know, I wrapped the last one round a tree). More importantly, it is a thrill to drive in the real world and a real, lasting pleasure to own. Driving it is something to look forward to. The performance is more than adequate; the comfort/handling balance is ideal for anyone who is not a racing driver; the sheer roadability of the car is of the highest order. It is also a design icon. Good luck with yours KenSilver!

Yes, that's pretty much what I have heard everywhere. I'm encouraged, and I'll pass on your comments to my wife.

R129 a supercar

Manual transmission is not the biggest problem. It would be nice to have a manual transmission but there are bigger deficiencies for the R129 SL500 to be classified as a true sports car.

· Suspension set up is for the comfort not performance. It could be easily corrected to a degree with a kit from Brabus or AMG
· Ratio of the rear end is too high. It came from the factory with the ratio of 1:2.65 but it would be necessary to get a ratio of 1:3.20 or even 1:3.27. To correct this software change is required as well as a new differential. Many years ago SL models could be optioned with different ratios but not any longer. This is the most difficult change to be had. Factory cooperation could be required.
· Steering is too slow but I could live with that if other deficiencies were corrected.
