Garage Door Opener on SL

I just purchased a 97 SL500 and really like it. However, there is one item I am hoping someone may be able to help me with or provide me with some guidance. I have followed the directions to a "T" in the owner's manual for programing the garage door opener at the rear view mirror buttons. The mirror LED even flashes to indicate the frequency has been accepted, yet it does not function when pushed to operate the garage door. Is there a secret to programming the mirror button that I do not know about? No biggie, but it would be nice to get it to work.

How far away are you from the garge door. I know mine does not have a far range. It only works about 20 feet from the door. Another thing, how long are you holding down the button. I usually have to hold mine down for about 1-2 seconds before the garage door will open. You don't have to worry about resetting the code by holding it down for a few seconds because if i am not mistaken the code will not clear unless the button is held down for 30 sec or more. I would give that a shot.

1 more thing.. does your garage door have rolling codes? I'm not sure if you can program the SL garage door option if the garage door uses rolling codes. I hope this helps

My 99 ML has the same feature...my garage door openers have the "rolling code" feature (installed in 97 when my house was built) and it works fine with those.

I can activate my gate and garage doors within a 50 yd. radius.

Your garage door opener ALSO has a procedure to follow (hope you kept the manual).

When setting the vehicle button, I also have to note the confirmation "flash" by the LED imbedded in the opener circuitry. And some openers have a limit of about seven remotes it will allow you to program. If something gets screwed up. you have to reset the opener, then recode ALL of your remotes (incl. the SL).

Thanks for all the information. I found the phone number for HomeLInk to be helpful. Though I have not yet spoken with a customer representative, I feel I am making some headway. The number led to the HomeLink website which I checked and it provided detailed instruction for programming a garage door opener which utilizes rolling codes. In addition, it shows my opener as being compatable with the HomeLink device. Unfortunately, I still must be doing something wrong and did not get it to work last night. I will try again tonite and see what happens.

Thumbs up

I had a similar situation with my CLK 500. I followed the instruc tions to a "T", the indicator lights flashed on the mirror but the door still would not open. When I checked the spec's on the garage door opener, I found out that it had the rolling codes. What I had to do was push the learn button on the door opener motor head and then within 30 seconds push the button on the transmitter on the mirror 2 times and voila it worked. When you do that you will have to do the same thing on any other transmitters that you have for other cars, since you will have changed the codes.
