Dash "idiot" light...what is it for? 380sl

K, I can't get to my car for the owner's manual right now.
I think I saw the dash light flash the signal shown below.
What's it for? Brake pads?

Yep. It's for the brakes. need to check and fix accordingly. You should have plenty of time since it only flashed.

Thanks, Nello.

Is it specific to fluid, front or rear brakes? (Do both front and rear have wear sensors?)

Sorry I didn't get specific. When I see the light come on I think one should check everything regarding brakes. The circular motion of the icon makes me think of a rotary action... for my 123, the true meaning of the light is "brake pad wear indicator lamp". It lights up during braking if the FRONT wheel brake pads are worn down. It should come on during ignition and then go out. If it doesn't come on at that time, then the bulb/circuitry is bad. If yours "flashed" while driving but not braking then it could mean a circuit problem and not real brake trouble. The fluid "low" indicator is the rectangular light that says "brake".. the same light for parking brake engaged. Hope this helps to clarify things.

It's the indicator for the wear sensors in the front pads; there aren't any in the rear pads. It will initially come on intermittently when the brakes are in use, and eventually be on all the time once the pads are really low; they should ideally be replaced before that happens.

Thanks guys!

Last question...is the sensor(s?) reusable? On my BMW 740 it was but most of the time broke when trying to remove.

The brake pad set includes the sensors. Kinda like getting shoelaces when you buy a pair of shoes...

Not all pad sets include the sensors, but they're maybe $2 or so each if you do have to buy them separately--definitely not worth trying to use the old ones.
