1986 560sl ignition switch

I need to change this switch and I assume you have to remove the instrument panel to do this. Does anyone know what kind of tool takes the air bag out? What size and type? Thanks. Rob T

Ignition Switch Access

Based on your 'Stalling Post' I agree that this a likely suspect.

Here's my 'How To'

Someone reported that the 1/8" allens refered to are actually T-27's. I haven't been back into mine to confrim...

my 86 560sl is definitely an allen, not a Torx. Maybe they went to Torx later. These are hard to find around here (and so is the $%#$% oil pan drainplug) so I ebay'ed a pretty good metric set.

Also (Ive done this exact procedure before, to fix an intermittent blower motor)

0. I would disconnect the battery FIRST, and store the airbag face UP (better to get hit by a balloon instead of a metal plate at 200mph!)

1. Please be careful when removing the instrument panel. Without the right tools/care, you can crack the front plastic, which is apparently not a seperable part (very $$$$)

1a. Distorting the dash pad while removing the instrument panel can cause cracks or make cracks worse, so don't.

2. Read other posts on this subject from others.

3. Remember where you took the wires /harness connectors from! This is a good time to inspect/change the lamps.

4. The screws to remove the ignition switch are hard to get to and easily lost. I now have TWO instead of THREE. A VERY stubby screwdriver and mirror is helpful.

5. You MAY have to put the key in the ignition to release the connector from the switch itself.

My '88 is definitely Torx for the airbag screws. I seem to recall that they were T-25.

Also, the factory SRS instructions say:
Quote:
After disconnecting the battery, wait 2 seconds, then unplug the red test connection-SRS plug connection (10-pole) in the front passenger footwell.
