560sl soft top leak

Hello all,

I have a 560SL which had a replacement top installed before I bought it. The top works perfectly in every way, but there is a gap where the top meets the body, just rearward of the doors.

Do all 560SL's have this gap? I'm getting water in the car after washing it or heavy rains, and I'd guess 90% of the wind noise comes through these two spots. When I have the blower on high, I can hear a whistling from this area (presumably from the air escaping).

Can't imagine that MB would have sold a car with a gap like this.. wondering if there is anything I can do to fix it?? I was thinking of putting some stiff plastic or wire (coat hanger piece?) inside the seam to stiffen the area and stop it from opening up to let air in.

Note to dmorrison: if the picture of that top looks a lot like yours, that's because it is Hope you don't mind me borrowing your picture

We have the same gap on our car.

Obviously don't spray the hose directly into the gap when washing the car!

...and what are you thinking driving that car in heavy rains? That's what a daily driver is for!

There's a little gap there on mine, also, on both sides. Less with the new top (just last month) than with the old one.

flare on soft top

If not folded correctly when stuffed into the boot, this area can develop a flare and a gap as you describe. My solution was to roll that part of the canvas reverse to the way it is flarring and tuck it up under the side of the roof. Leave it that way for a day or two. This technique seemed to make it lay a bit flatter when I untucked it and allowed it to return to its proper position.

Top gap at bottom

Both my factory and replacement tops fit this same way, but I've never had a problem with rain coming in. The suggestion to roll the material backward is a pretty good one. I would be very careful about stiffing the material in this area. It could cause the top to vibrate againist the panel and cause a rather ugly abrasion on the paint visable when the top is down. Your replacement top may not be a good fit. Take it back to the installer for a look see.
