560SL full of Electrical Ghosts
How many owners have problems with electrical ghosts in their vehicles and what was done to address them?
I have an intermittent rear taillamp light, a low beam headlamp that sometimes functions with the high beam lamp, a horn that is intermittent, cruise control that is intermittent and occasionally heat coming from the climate control, when set for cold. Each of these 5 items continue to work on occasion and it is a nice treat when all five happen to be functioning at once. I have traced wires, checked bulbs, etc. with no resolution as yet. I enjoy D.I.Y. activities, but when it comes to electrical problems, these ghosts get the better of me. |

560 sl electrical intermittents
You can clear up all those problems by replacing all the fuses-they get hairling cracks), cleaning the fuse holder real good, unplugging all the relays , cleaning the contacts and reinstalling( use tv tuner contact cleaner from radio shack on all connections), remove, clean, and reattach all the ground wires (everywhere they connect to frame, body, parts), and doing the same thing (separate, clean, reattach) all the wiring harness plugs into things and other harnesses, remove all the bulbs and replace them, clean all the bulb sockets.
Lots of time, very little cost (<$10) MBZ continued to use 1935 electrical connector technology until about 2000 |
