Smitty was the first one I knew to "leave" Merz dealer and break out on his own. That was so long ago that I cannot remember the year. He knows his stuff. He used to do a lot of work himself and was priced reasonably. Then it seems he went through a period of sitting in the office and inspecting what his workers were doing. Still good work then, but prices soared... have to pay the workers and add in some for the "owner". When I was last there, he had started doing a lot of the work himself with only a few helpers. That has been years ago, maybe 5? He is extremely pleasant and really knows a lot about Merz.. the only negative from several friends who had used him was the same as me.. "too high priced". So, he may be more "fair priced" today, I don't know.. but he and his helpers are really really good with their work. Let me know what you think/impressions if you try him. Oh, the other plus is.. the liquor store is right across the street.

Other than Smitty there is Inter-Shop (afraid you'll have to look in the phone book for number) on Kerr Ave near back side of airport. I had them change my oil and they overfilled it.. I haven't been back but they may be worth checking out.

I'm going to Fayetteville to have my "baby" worked on.. honest people, worth the trip, with excellent work. Meade Mercedes, country road, Merz everywhere in yard, no bathroom for customer (just go in the woods), even the sister gets under the cars to do work. My kinda place! 910-483-4118 When I had trouble with my 83, their father fixed it for $35 and told me to mail him a check.. I did. The father passed away this past year, operated by 2 brothers and their sister.

Oh, and then there's Tony's on Market St. Good work but a little on the pricey side. Their parts place is not as pricey and I've bought several things from them. They have also done work for me.. very good, but again the most expensive around. It's worth the trip just to see the restored old European Autos in the showroom. They also sell used cars.. if you inquire about the price, you'll find they are very proud of what they have.

Good Luck.. hope this helps some.

When I bought mt TD back in May, Smitty was there pretty much all by himself except for a woman who answered the phone, took care of the paper work, etc. I suspect it is his wife?
If you get desperate, you can go to the Jiffy Lube on Market but make sure that Arthur is working and works on your car. You should call ahead and make sure they have the filter in staock too.

this is the one

I was in the car business for a long time and I am very picky. Stan Hall at autowerks (sp?) is the only name you need for a mercedes. 876-1150 I think.

Follow up.

Ended up going to the dealer (Bob King), as I wanted an alignment done in addition to an oil change. Charged ~50.00 for the O.C. and $118 for the alignment. This was probably the 5th time I have had this car aligned and they are the only ones to make the damn thing go straight down the road. Mentioned that it looked as if the steering box had never been locked during an alignment before.

Prices seem reasonable to me and the service was good- even washed 'er!

Mike

Good Merz shops in Wilmington

Hey,
I have used Smitty. He is actually priced pretty reasonable except for his used Merz parts. Everyone I know who has used him has been pleased with his work. He does know his stuff. There is a shop off of Market on Covil Ave. called Performance Import Cars. They guy there who owns the place does his own work. 343-1650. They seem pretty good.

If you are ever up around Wilson, NC, James Bunn at Bunn Auto right off the Interstate 95 at highway 42 is an awesome Mercedes mechanic. He is honest, does all of my work and works on a friends car too. He knows his stuff and is very reasonable on his labor. Hope this helps.

Question Ultimate Automotive in Raleigh, NC??

Does anyone have any experience with ultimate automotive in Raleigh NC on Trawick Rd. Billy Atkins is the owner. A 300D owner referred me to him. He has two 300D's - one has over 500,000 miles. I would like to know if you felt this was a good shop?

Western NC MB repair!!

If you are in the area of WNC you need to check out Eurospec in Fletcher just outside Asheville NC ! All they do is MB and by the looks of the there service area , business is booming! They fixed my E 420 faster than I could tell him what was wrong! They did not want to charge me so I gave him a big tip!

I got the tip about auto verks. Thank you. Mike is great and they really know their stuff. I have a 1974 240D and rather than trying to take me to the bank they were helpful and showed me what needed to be done. It turns out my car needed just $100 worth of work. The shop doesnt look like much but that is not what counts. They are located off commonwealth rd near uptown.

The only indy that I have ever used on these two is in Raleigh.

His name is Ronnie King and he owns "The Car Place"

It's off Capital Blvd. with all the new car dealers.

919-878-5600.

Tell him I sent you there.
