Question Seeking MB Mechanic in Low Country(Hilton Head South Carolina)

I am in dire need of a reliable mechanic. My 1995 SL600 (V12)requires a new Harmonic Balancer which may entail replacing the "Crankshaft". The only certified mercedes mechanic on Hilton Head has said its beyond his ability. The other mechanic on the isalnd won't even look at the car.

I am willing to have the car towed within 100 miles.

As a side note the rearview mirror needs to be replaced and I just can't bring myself to paying the mercedes dealership $1,000. If anyone knows of another place to buy used or new that would be appreciated too!

Although it is a little trip from Hilton Head, I use Autobahn Service Center in Savannah, Georgia. The trip from Hilton Head is about 45 minutes by car.

The owner is Dietmar Strohmetz, born and raised in Germany, and knows all Mercedes inside out from memory. The shop is Mercedes, BMW, Volvo only. He is only open M-F 8-5, but will provide a loaner vehicle for you, either from his "for sale" fleet, or else will get you a car from Enterprise, and he'll pick up the tab.

Autobahn is in the Sandfly section of Savannah, at 2109 Norwodd Avenue, phone is (912) 352-0719.

If you need directions, or more info, please let me know, as he is the only shop I use for my Mercedes, especially since the Savannah dealer is dreadful, and I don't have time to take the car to the Hilton Head dealer for service, and I am not at all mechanically inclined.

Thumbs up

I can recommend Ted who owns Black Forest Import Service in Mt. Pleasant, SC. They work on MB and Volvo. He works on my MB cars when I have a problem that's over my head or requires real expensive special tools. His # is 843-849-9062

Any good Mercedes Shop in SC (Columbia area)

Any suggestions for a decent, honest Benz Repair shop in South Carolina (prefer Columbia area, but willing to drive for quality)?
Dealer is having a hard time fixing PS leak on my400e - heading back for third time and am wondering if indeed I don't need to find myself an independent.

Also looking for excellent paint shop - my 'new' '94 e500 was scratched up in shipment and I need some top of the line expertise.

Thanls for any help.
Charlie

My brother is a mechanic for an independent in Columbia. He specializes in Mercedes. This is a terrible thing to say but I don't know the name of the shop. I have never had to call him there. I always talk to him at home.
I don't want to leave you hanging. We are heading out of town tomorrow early and won't be back untill Saturday maybe Sunday.
I will get the number and name at that time and post it.
When you go there you can use my name Dave Morrison and ask for my brother Kevin.
I'm really soryy about this and a little embarrassed that I don't know the name of the shop my brother works for.

I am so sorry to have taken so long to post the name of the shop.
We were stuck in washington with some friends and did not get back untill the day before my trip, very late. So here it is

Brown Motor Works, BMW
In Columbia, S.C.
803-551-0991
My brother is Kevin, he is there Mercedes mechanic.
When he was 5, he took a lawnmower engine apart to see how it worked. He's been working on cars ever since.

Thanks for the info - I'll check them out!
(The dealer claims to have finally fixed the PS unit - had it all day yesterday - guaranteed it wouldn't leak any more - at least they were reputable enough to not charge me again for doing the rebuild over - but why should it take 3 times do to something so routine correctly)

Ted definitely knows his stuff. He has been working MBs since the late 70s.

You could try Essex Motor Works off Old Alpine Road. Ask for Kip. HOWEVER, make sure you get a solid estimate. I know a few folks who got sticker shock once the work was over. Brown Motor Works is off Clemson Road, which is exit 80 off I-20. I am blessed in that I have been lucky tackling my own repairs the last few years. Never been to Brown, but I know a few folks who have and never a complaint. Essex is a real old timer, but not sure how long he will be around. He swapped out my ball joints when I first got a MB in 2008 and I could not beat the price and turn around time, ... a few hours and $225.00
