Hi d-money,
besides the MB dealer McConnell Automotive, there are 2 that specialize on MB and some other imports like BMW and Porsche. One is Saucier/Koby (Tony Saucier is the owner) on 2627 Old Shell Road. He has installed a starter for me and did the chain tensioner and guides on my car before I bought it. He did not alert me to the fact that the ringgear was broken when he did the starter. (McConnell claims the starter had only one of the 2 bolts installed when they did the ringgear.) He uses OEM parts. The second is German Auto House on Tara Blvd (off Schillinger), 10 miles away from me. Mr. Pete Schmidt works by himself and has many years off experience. I believe he is good but it is somewhat hard to do business with them as they work only Monday through Thursday, you have to leave the car there for the day and can’t wait for it, you can’t get a quote over the phone but rather have to bring the car there and pay $35 for the estimate, which will be counted towards the bill if you have the work done there within a month. I got a quote for a transmission rebuild of $ 1950, I believe. He uses only MB parts unless the car is really old. My 87 doesn’t qualify. To replace a thermostat or a co2 sensor, I would use Saucier/Koby. For a transmission rebuild or serious engine work, I’d use German Auto House or the dealer. But I am still looking and doing more myself. Anything over there in Baldwin County? Regards Reinhard Kreutzer |

I have used Jordan's Automotive in Daphne. He does great work, though he is not the economy mechanic. Very satisfied with his work. He did all the work on my 300 sdl from the previous owner. He is behind the Honda dealer on a side road.

Pete Schmidt
I would second the German Auto Haus, eg Schmidt. Nice guy, honest, good work, fair prices

I can tell you where not to take your car.
I took my car to Bodifords on Airport across from Coastal Ford. They kept my car for one week and drove it about 38 miles during that time leaving me without any transportation for that long a duration. They charged me 175.00 "diagnostic fee" and then after all of that, told me " we don't know? ". They should not have charged me excessively like that or if at all if they couldn't come up with anything. I was very disappointed in their ability to diagnose as they had told me how good they were at it on the phone prior to bringing it in. It sat for 2 days prior to being looked at as well. Anyway, I still have the problem I originally took it in for and I'm going to try and go with these other two guys now myself. Thanks and good luck, Rob |

Well we have Pete Schmidt who I believe is great at what he does, but his wife is a bit difficult to work with. I used to go to him but stopped doing business due to Alicia's (Pete's wife) bad attitude. Hopefully that has improved by now since it has been atleast 15 years since I last visited them. The one that I use alot is Richard who works with Keith Kingan's classic cars. Richard is honest and hard working but certainly not as astute as Pete. So if you can put up with the attitude go with Pete, if not then you might want to call on Richard.

Mobile, AL?
Looking to get a lead or two on good indys in Mobile, AL. or the east bay, Daphne/Fairhope/Foley/Gulf Shores, AL.
Specifically for a '99 E300TD MB diesel. Any leads in addition to the above, will be most appreciated! |
