1989 300SEL stall/fuel problem.

My 1989 300 SEL is having problems with stalling at low idel and not being able to restart until after 2-3 minutes have passed. It has also started to do this while just simply driving. It is a fuel issue I am almost certain but don't know what the problem is due to it being able to start again. I would think that if my fuel pump relay ( 1 year old ) were bad it would not start again. Does this relay reset itself? I also noticed that my ABS lite is on sometimes and other times it's off. Sometimes the check engine lit will come on for a breif second and then they the both will shut off. I just installed new cap, rotor, plugs, wires, and fuel abd air filters. ANY help would be greatly appreciated.

First guess- the fuel pump relay is trying to mess up on you again...

Second guess- the fuel filter is getting over clogged...

Third guess- the over voltage protection [ovp] relay is trying to mess up...

1989 300 SEL

Thanks for the reply. I suspected the same thing and am getting a new filter and fuel pump relay. Could you please explain to me how it is that a relay can not function and why and then begin to work again and why on MB. It is a nagging question in my mind and wondered if you knew the mechanism behind it all.

I have read many acounts of this type of stalling/ not starting problem but no real explanation as to why. Your thoughts are most appreciated. This forum has been a great help to me in the past and it really is an impresive resource. Thanks again!

Vibration causes the solder joints fail. The relay will engage because the solder joints for the coil work fine but the larger pins don't conduct the current. Resolder the relay with plenty of solder, a subjective observation I know.

This seems to be a common problem on European cars. Earlier Volvos have the same problems with the FPR.

I need to do mine.

check to see if the rubber hose from the air cleaner to the fuel pressure regulator is not cracked or broken.mine broke, I had to remove the fpr and replace the rubber hose $10 from Mercedes. the fuel pressure regulator does just that. it returns fuel to the tank under vacuum load. no vacuum to the regulator causes problems.regulates pressure to the cis.and returns fuel to tank.

I was having the same problems with my 300TE 4matic. I found this write-up extremely helpful. Artisan : What to do when my M103 is giving me trouble: A beginners guide

My problem ended up being the EHA. I swapped out a donor from a parts engine and haven't had a problem since.
