Tripometer/ Odometer Broken

can anyone help me... i have 121,000 miles on my 1986 190E. I was filling up my tank, and once it was full, i began to drive off, i automatically always reset my tripometer, and it reset. I was driving away and i noticed that both the tripometer and odometer had quit counting miles, good for selling the car :) but not good for trying to maintain it with oil changes, brakes, etc.

can anyone help

if you do a search, you'll find some info on trying to repair it. be careful - see my post about 10 topics down.

Seems like they all do this. Usually, there's a little metal gear on the end of the odometer shaft that slips too far to the side. Or sometimes there's a plastic gear on the other side that breaks. It is a DIY repair. Do a search. You'll find tons of info.

How to search

You'll notice at the top right a few buttons, including "user cp", "register", and a few others including "search". Click on this.
On the screen that pops up, you'll see a window to enter search terms. Try entering, for example, exactly as I've typed it:

odometer AND repair

and then click on "perform search" and peruse the posts that pop up.

One thought--I've seen a number of posts refer to the idea that resetting the trip odometer while moving is bad. I've had no problem doing it on other makes, but MB's mechanism may not tolerate it well. My own tripmeter has given no trouble, but out of habit I reset it only when refueling, so the car's not moving at the time.

Hmm.

I'll be looking at the trip odo in the 300TE on Wednesday -- doing the evaporator and the trip odo hasn't worked since I go the car. Main odo does, so I've not fixed it, but since I have to take the cluster out anyway, this is the time!

Same thing happened to me a little over a week ago. Filled up the tank and zeroed out the trip meter. Was driving home and noticed I was still on zero.

I called my mechanic and he said I had to take it to a speedo shop. None up in the high desert that work on MB. He gave me a name of a shop in Riverside and I called and left a message. Then I looked up the shop on BBB and it had an unsatisfactory rating. I called the MB dealer in Riverside (Walters) and found out they send their odometer repairs to the same shop. AND...they don't warranty the work they outsource to this shop. Interesting.

Anyway...I found a shop in Gardena, CA that had a great BBB rating. Called the guy and he quoted me over the phone $150. Made an appointment for Saturday and he fixed it in less than 2 hours and charged me $140. It was the gears. Works great now and have 1 yr warranty.

The shop is A-1 Electric & Speedometer. 310.217.0491--ask for Marcel. Very pleased with the whole experience.

BTW, the first shop returned my call and I told him that I was going to keep looking because his shop had an unsatisfactory rating with the BBB for failing to respond to complaints. He just said, okay. Not the least bit concerned.
