S500/W140 Trunk Vacuum Assist Not Pulling Trunk Flat
I just noticed after this past winter that the trunk on my 94 s500 is no longer totally flush with the rest of the bodu. I shut the trunk but it doesn't "suck" it in anymore, or as much as it should. I tried to look around to look for the vacuum vent hoping that some leaves were blocking it. But to my dismay, not being able to locate the vent, and reading other's having problems with the vacuum assist, I feel the problem is bigger. Does anyone have any advice as to how I can get my trunk to close flat with the rest of the body. Any input would be greatly appreciated.

Sulman,
I replaced the vacuum element (located inside the trunk lid)on the assist on my car and it was fairly straight forward. I took it apart and checked the part number then ordered parts. Mine had a pretty good leak in it so after failing a few times the system had to be reset by pulling the fuse for a few seconds. The fuse is in the pannel in the trunk, #8 or maybe #9 (it was labeled). When the replacement was done it was not flush so it was necessary to adjust the colsure height. On my '97 there were 2 nuts behind the striker plate (inside the trunk), just loosen them and adjust your height. Now the catch... When I was doing this I was subscribed to AlldataDIY and the pictures they showed were different and much more complex. Things may have changed between your '94 and my '97. I would start by taking the inner lining off the trunk lid, operating the lid a few times (click the latch in the striker plate to activete, press the button to open) and check if you find something that is not right. Note: This is all assuming that the vacuum pump is working. Good luck, Chris |

Could also be a disconnected or broken vacuum line to locking mechanism.

What happens when you slam the trunk down? Does it close flush?
My 95S420 wouldn't engage the closure mechanism or had trouble doing it. When I repaired the convenience pump, it started working flawlessly. Prior to that you had to close it almost manually. I'd try turning off the assist and see where it closes manually.

I hear there can be problems with the microswitch that triggers the closing assist and trunk lid handle retraction. One more thing to consider. Do a search on 'W140 microswitch'

Even when I slam the trunk shut it doesn't stay flush. Once it's closed, I can physically push the trunk down so its flush, but as soon as I remove the force, it comes back up.

I also just tried the fuse trick by pulling fuse 3 and fuse 9. With the fuses out, obviously the doors nor the trunk sucked. Yet once the fuses were back in, the doors had the vacuum assist as they normally do, but the trunk was in its old condition. Most likely would you all say that it is a leak in the pipe going ot the trunk considering all the other parts of the car work by vacuum assist.

Sultman:
Check it. My backup assists failed when I needed to address the convience unit (my son, in his inevitable wisdom, push both of the masts into the diaphram together. I suspect one diaphram is ruptured.) Anyways, a mighty vac on the lead will tell if their is a leak.

check the bolts for the "striker" in the trunk (not on the lid). The bolts back out sometimes and make the trunk not close all the way. Just a thought before you spend any money. I have seen it tons of times. If i remember correctly, you can access the bolts without removing much trim. good luck.
