Hi all!

Is it OK to add ATF fluid in the steering resevoir? My mechanic did that to my car this morning. I've read some posts that some people do it. Is there any harm done? Thanks!

Car is a '90 190E, btw.

I used Dexron III and Mercedes PS fluid for mu 300e.Neither cured the squeaking at the steering wheel. No diff in steering either.

I read a few years ago that modern ATF additives have gotten to a point where they will ruin seals in power steering systems. It happened to me on my 240D. Go to the parts store and pick up some power steering fluid. It's expensive, but it will save the seals in your system.

Good luck,

Modern ATF has additives which are not good for your power steering. Go the parts store and buy some power steering fluid. It is expensive, but much cheaper than power steering components.

Good luck,

Larry, you say that "modern ATF" is not
suitable for power steering use. Can you
document that?

I run Dexron III in the 380SL that I take
care of and two cycles of that have cured
a previously noisy and unsmooth steering.

I am of course pretty religious about
fluid changes of all types.
