After reading posts about timing chain stretch and replacement I am very nervous about the timing chain. The car has 197k and chain has never been replaced! The 15k service was done at 195k by the same mechanic who has worked on the car for 15 yrs. I assume he knows to check the chain.

How do I remove the valve cover to check it? I found four bolts that are easy to get to, but what about the other stuff attached to the valve cover. Once I unbolt it do I need to remove these things as well? Thanks! Joe

What model do you have?

If you want to DIY,spend $15.00 and get a Haynes repair manual. It will pay for itself the first 15 minutes you use it. I'm guessing you have a 123 (77-85 300D) by your description.

They cover this and a whole lot more. Armed with that and this forum, you can get into a whole lot of trouble!

Oh, Good! I will need lots of help because my wife expects no money to be spent on this car since I did not ask for approval this time! I have owned it less than 24hrs and when I point to it in the driveway she does not see it. We should start a forum for marital counseling.

Are the cd-roms pretty good?

Thanks! Joe

Sorry Joe,
I don't think anybody here is "qualified" to give you advice on your better half. Even the pros would stay away from this one.I am sure. However, advice on your car should be easy.
Good luck, you will need it ;^)

Joe,

My wife felt the same way when I traded my '84SD for a '90SE. Then she "had" to drive it while I changed fluids/filters on her '85D.

She returned commenting how nice it drove. But, I don't think she could ever lower herself to suggest I should swap cars.

Sometimes, a "failure to communicate" can be good. Although I'd never...what's that honey?...gotta go!

Mr. BILL
