My volvo diesel had a provision for a water drain on bottom of the fuel filter--nevertheless I remember one 10 degree night it gummed up and died. Just how much protection do diesel fuel conditioners give us?
Whats the best way to keep my diesel running in winter? I'm worried. Last time it died i had to walk two hours on a country highway!

I tell people to use a block heater. Once running, the fuel in a Mercedes is run through at a higher rate than the engine can consume. The warm fuel is then returned to the tank. Once this happens for a while, the tank is warm.
