I think the new chrome strips that fit on the plastic part are like $1.40 each from Performance Products.

If you use a new grill and new chrome, it would look great on a Black car. I would not use an old grill just for the fact that the plastic has deteriorated over time and makes for a poor surface for the paint to adhere to. Those retaining clips are a pain to put back on. Oh, and be careful when you do the new chrome strips. The ones I got from Performance Products were all the same length and I had to shorten a couple with a pair of tin snips. Since the profile of the strips is basically a "C", when you snip them, it compresses the shape on that end. That is not a problem as long as the grill frame hides the crimped end.

I'd keep it stock grey. If they looked cool in black Mercedes would've figured that out.

My 2 1/2 cents.

I painted the grill insert on my 420SEL black a few months ago, and man does it look better. I can email you a picture if you want to see what it looks like.

I( painted my grille insert matte black a few weeks ago, the car looks 100 times better. I am working on scanning the pics now along with my new tail lights.
