what does everyone think about the low 3rd brake light rear spoilers for w124's?
I am slowly growing fonder of the small, more common spoiler with the brake light in the center for the w124 models. I have an 87 300e, and I think it would sport it up nicely. What is everyone's opinion on these spoilers? Anyone have experience successfully diy'ing one of these?, or is it strictly a bodyshop job? I already have a can of paint in my color from painting the filler panels under my headlights (switched to euros), so I am thinking I would paint it myself. Does anyone know if the wire for the light on the spoiler is spliced right off the brake light, or if you have to run it to the front of the car? Hmmmm.....
All replies are graciously appreciated. p.s. My apologies if this is more of a performance topic, and it ends up there.

Adding a rear spoiler is a very personal choice. It really doesn't matter what others think about them. It's your car and if you like them go for it. I'd never install one, but that's me. I prefer a pristine stock car.

A spoiler of the sort that is normally put on a 4-door sedan is of little or no functional use. There is no danger that the rear end will leave the road at any speed you are likely to drive the car. On some cars, like the Infiniti J30 and the early 90's Nissan Maxima, they serve to uglify the car considerably, in my opinion. Of course, they are far less functional on a front wheel drive car.
I tend to think of a spoiler as a tattoo: unnecessary and expensive, but a matter of personal taste.

Years ago I had my wife's Honda Prelude at the dealer to get a spoiler installed as an option for her birthday. I will add that the kit came with a stiffer trunk hinge torsion spring to deal with the added weight of the spoiler...consider this when you bolt that unit onto the trunk of your W124. Wiring is simply splicing into the current brake light circuit by your rear window. Make sure you disconnect AND remove the old unit if you go this route...some inspection stations will fail you for an inoperative unit, even if the spoiler light works.

spoiler light hookup
If you splice into existing brake light, both the old brake lights and the new spoiler light will work together! PS Hate spoiler look. abe g

Spiking on only ONE parking light will trigger the " burned light" light in the dash.
Spoiler: Not me, even if if were free. thanks. jackD |
