Whereas I don't believe that we will change the viewpoint of those who look down on mechanics as being something less than your average Joe nor that of society as a whole I would also like to add my 2 cents.

I have always enjoyed working on cars even tho I have never had formal training. I usually find out the hard way that I am in too deep and I have learned a lot that way! At the same time I am never afraid to try and the thrill of figuring out how others have built and designed a machine has always given me a thrill (not to mention skinned knuckles, a lighter wallet and a good command of swear words!). I can say that this is the best web site ever when it comes to honest, straight forward and timely advice about a car that I hope to keep running well into the next century.

Thanks! Just ignore the smucks, there are plenty of honest appreciate folks out there that appreciate your feedback.

Going to the original statement, probably the person that sent the e-mail was not aware that his name was not written. In my case my name is attached to the e-mail address, so I do not sign my e-mails.

(By the way, I am not the one who sent the unsigned e-mail!!!)

Well, I didn't mean to cause such a ruckus (is that a word?).

The email that started all this was a personal one not a response on this forum. The reason I brought it up was that in another thread someone had mentioned asking a moderator a question privately and having got no response was asking the question publicly.

When I read that I thought of the email I had ignored and the reason for it. I didn't bring this up because I had no idea if that had occurs in that threads case. It just brought it to my mind.

I didn't reply earlier as I didn't want to keep bringing the post to the top.

I really appreciate the kind words, but stop, you are embarrassing me.

An additional view/challenge, kind of Golden Rule-ish:

Those of us who have made use of resources like this need to reciprocate when possible. That is, don't be shy in "going off-line" with someone who seems earnest in their quest for some technical help. More than once I've tried to offer some sort of remuneration to folks who have helped me via email or whatever, invariably the response is "Don't sweat it, I do this because I enjoy it" or "Thanks, but I just like to help others learn from my experiences". These folks are valuable resources; it is then up to the rest of us to pass on the good Karma. Lend a helping hand. Do unto others .... For me, helping somebody solve a problem, especially when doing so avoids a large service/repair bill, is very rewarding in itself - and the right thing to do to keep these forums going.

I just wanted to say THANKS! to all the people that have helped me so far...i really appreciate the time that the people put to offer their help..they don't have to do this for us..they're just trying to help people out (and for no consultation fee!)...just wanted you guys to know there are people that appreciate you!!!

I've noticed that the techs and accomplished DIY-ers here are always willing to answer questions and offer analysis and possible fixes. I've also noticed that there are recurring questions on nearly a DAILY basis - usually regarding oil, trannies or overvoltage relays - and I wonder where you folks get the patience to answer the same lame questions over and over, especially when this site has such a simple and effective search tool?! Having to wade through this repetetive stuff to get to the interesting bits and pieces ruffles MY feathers - so I suppose a kind word is in order to those willing to answer them once again...

I just want you guys to know how much I enjoyed reading this discusion and agreeing wholeheartedly with everything that has been said. The educational philosophies discussed realy got my attention. As a juvenile court officer I have long felt that too many kids are simply overlooked by school counselors and administrators when it comes to stimulating more vocational and technical interests. I have had local sub-contractors meet with these folks and tech instructors to connect young people with excellent aptitudes to these areas of study. I think you all know the rest of the story. They talk it to death and let it die on the vine while at the same taking goverment grant monies and pretend to slap together a School to Work program. Anyway, I'am going to print this entire discusion and see to it these same people get a chance to read it beginning with our school superintendent. Thanks again!
