Should you replace clutch with compressor

Hello,

My ac compressor went bad and my mechanic is replacing it. I was told by someone else that we should have him also replace the clutch at the same time as the part is only approx. $100.more.

He disagrees. He said that he replaces compressors all the time and "if it's not broken, don't fix it".

I have a 1990 300E.

Any qualified opinion would be greatly appreciated.

mm ;)

I don't know how it works over there, but in Australia it's unusual to buy a A/C compressor that isn't complete (clutch included).

Did your old compressor seize or start leaking? If it seized or leaked from the front seal then I would replace the clutch. If it leaked from anywhere else then I wouldn't worry about it.

Go ahead and replace it. The peace of mind will be worth it.
