Ignition switch problem 560SL

Hello all,

I have a 560SL that I put a new starter on 9 months ago (the old one was sticking "on" and causing a grind once the engine started). For the last nine months, it's been working perfectly.

Now when you start the car, about 30-50% of the time it will make a loud metallic noise as you turn the key to engage the starter. The noise happens just before or right when the starter begins turning, not after the engine has started.

I checked and cleaned all of my starter connections (large battery & ground wires @ starter, small ignition wire). I even replaced the connector at the end of the small ignition wire as it was corroded.

No change. Still does it. I did notice one thing though -- If I grab the key and turn it clockwise as hard and as far at it will go, the car will start perfectly with no noise. Now I'm beginning to suspect the ignition switch (electrical portion, not the ignition lock or tumbler) since maybe the problem is caused by the ignition switch not making a proper connection unless it has been turned ALL the way to the end.

Any thoughts before I order an ignition switch? Nothing else has changed on the car in the last nine months.. same battery, alternator, etc. Starter was a Bosch reman.

Thanks!
Neal

PS - I should point out that everything works normally when the car is running. I don't have to jiggle the ignition switch to make any of the electronics or climate control work.

Thought I'd point this out as I see from other posts that this is a common sign that the ignition switch is hosed. Mine doesn't do any of this stuff (yet!)
