I am replacing the pads on the front and rear of my 400E. What type of pads should I use (Semi or Metallic)? I am also concerned about the excessive amount of brake dust residue left on the front wheels and lower panel of my car. Is their a pad other tham OEM that will solve this problem? Also, with nearly 100k miles should I consider changing all of the discs?

Any additional advice welcomed,

Brian

Brakes and ignition componets, always stick with OEM. Measure the discs to check the thickness. If they have a big lip on the outer edge they probably are below the minimum specs (which is stamped on the disc, under the rust). If they look badly discolored with uneven wear patterns, it is time to replace them...

Brake dust? If you don't drive the car very hard then dust shields may be used, but the factory doesn't recommend them because they stop to air flow that keeps the discs cool...

Hi Brian! The 400E has a great set of brakes - keep them performing up to par with OEM pads. The characteristic MB brake dust is a bitter pill to swallow - but hey - at least you have the easier-to-clean 8-hole wheels! The wheels on 300Es of the same vintage are a nightmare in this regard!
Regards,
-NJ

Almost forgot - just say no to dust shields. Wax your wheels when you wax the car - it makes them easier to clean.
