I found a local 85 300TD wagon with 225K miles. I've never owned a diesel and would like to know what to look for in terms of potential issues. I'll have a PPI performed if it looks half way decent.

Hi nuemann: Most importantly, service records of the vehicle and then look for signs of rust. The person conducting your PPI should be able to give you a full assessment of the vehicle. I have an '83 300TDT w/195K on the clock and maintain it meticulously and she has given me years of trouble-free driving.

Make sure that a compression check is done and that there is minimal blow by. Also make sure that the load leveling system works, because that can be expensive. I also have an 83 300TDT with 341,000 on the clock wuth original engine. The key to diesel longevity is oil changes and not putzing around town in them.
