Question ATF is foaming?

I noticed that my Automatic Trans Fluid was foaming the other day, so I changed the fluid and the filter. But it is still foaming. Also, the transmission will somtimes not use 1st gear or 4th (overdrive), but then if I turn the engine off and wait say 10 mins and turn it back on all the gears work again? Whats goin on? Any ideas why? Trans has 138K miles. Thanks -Chris

How much fluid did you put in it? It sounds like it is overfilled.

You didn't mention which model you have, but generally it is recommended that when filling up tranny fluid, you start out with 4 quarts. Start the engine and put the gear selector in each gear for a moment or two. Return the selctor to park and check the level, add accordingly. Most trannys take 6+ quarts. Check your owner's manual for specifics.
