Slk 55 Amg
Can anybody tell me what the top speed of the formula 1 safety car is, this is the one that recently raced in Spa
|
I think they are limited to 155mph, but without the limiter maybe mid to low 180's.

According to AMG, the SL55 (sorry, lost the link) is limited to 250km/h in many areas, and 300km/h in others. The reason has to do with tires. There is no faster 4400lb car and they can't find a tire capable of hauling that heavy a car at over 300 km/h. With pure racing tires, I understand that the SL55 has run to OVER 350 km/h when completely uncorked.
Despite the extra HP, the SL65 won't go a whole ton faster thanks to the top speed being drag induced. |
And to those of us who are burdened by the US's ineptness in transitioning to KMH? How many mph is that approx?
thanks |
250 = 155mph
300 = 186mph 350 = 217mph |
the F1 SLK is 3,230 lb.s and 360 h.p. it has upgraded brakes, cooling system, exhaust, suspension wheels tires, bodywork. Looks like the seating is lowered also - but that is just a guess. info from May/June 2004 MBCA Star magazine
very kool to load that thing through Eau Rouge with a bit of road dampness listening to Rush Red Barchetta |
Are we talking about the SLK or SL? Two totally different cars. Wow 217mph! I wonder what the SL600 can do? Maybe 220mph?
|
I read a stock SL55 AMG, unrestricted, would pull about 207mph.
The SL55 AMG F1 is tweaked in many ways, including bigger wheels, additional cooling, bigger ceramic brakes, different body work, no idea about the engine. The seats are AMG racing bucket seats, again quite different to stock. Here is a link to the AMG pricelist; the SL starts at page 78. You will see that the performance package costs 24,500euros ex works. For that you get the following: Quote:

626 h.p. takes the Mclaren SLR to 208 - electronic limted I don't know and more drag than a AMG SL I wouldn't think so.
Now they are using an AMG SLK for the F1 pace car. BTW when that wacko ex-Reverend at the olympics ran into the Brazilian marathoner and Jim Lampley confirmed him as the guy that ran onto the track at the British Silverstone race in 2003. Lampley stated the figure of 240mph as the speed cars were approaching the ex-Reverend. I love when people spat out incorrect numbers for sensational purposes. |
