Cel Light On- Code P0170 ***fixed***
I tried everything to make that damn code go away for more than a couple hours. Plugs, filters, raise the idle, lower the idle, etc. New oxygen sensors to boot. But alas, I did not want it to be the AMM, but I finally sprung for the $300 and bought one. That little hunk of plastic and wire doesn't look $300 worth but it was the best three hundred I ever spent. CEL gone. More power than I ever remember having. Smother transmission shifts. Off idle hesitation gone. Flutter I had at 2500 rpm, gone. More power, did I mention more power. Apparently I have needed a new AMM for some time.
All in all, if anyone suffers from these ills, the $300 was well worth it. I hated to spend it, but well worth it. |

fredfisher,
did you replace it yourself, and did you have the CEL cleared, or did it go out by itself? any air/fuel mixture adjustments, or did that self-adjust? finally, did you consider ebay as a source for the AMM/MAF? |

RE source for MAS (AMM or whatever you want to call it): click on FASTLANE here at Mercedesshop.com! It is always at least 50% off dealer price AND fast shipping AND it supports this site, which is invaluable! Plus you can order 24/7, and if you have questions you can call the 800# and talk to Phil who is a very helpful, friendly and knowledgeable individual!

John, I just saw your "change air filter often" tip and think it's an example of common sense genius! What's it work out to for you, every 3 months?

I have been driving about 2000kms a month, so about every 7-8 months I do a service where the filters get swapped out. Now, there are some exceptions. Last summer I swapped a new engine air filter in just before leaving for a 5500km trip to Alaska and back, and then changed it again right away when we got home. We had to drive through some terrible conditions (gravel, clouds of bugs, etc.) and didn't want a rotten filter in there. Every 30,000kms (two FSS countdowns) I do the equivalent of a B service where I go through the car with a fine tooth comb. Also, every other spring I change the coolant and brake fluid. I know the MB interval is longer, but I'm "old school" when it comes to some stuff. Plugs are supposed to last 72,000kms but thats BS. I change 'em every 45,000 or so. Fuel filters are to last 96,000kms or 4-5 years? Yeah, right. In my parts, our gas is pretty "un-clean" and most MB nuts I know swap 'em every year. The only thing that REALLY pisses me off is the lack of real service interval for the 722.6 tranmission. Jerks at MB can't see past the end of the warranty or lease contract. How things have changed...

I've learned from other posts to stay away from the K&N filter (too much $$ anyway), ut is there a difference between the Hengst and the Mann? Also, given your knowledge, I'm curious if you have an opinion re: a problem with my odometer in this other thread.
