The check engine liight usually comes on because the O2 sensor isn't responding correctly to mixture adjustements (that is, give a lean signal no matter how rich the mixture is supposed to be, or vice versa), and the computer turns the light on.

You need to have the codes read, just fishing about will cost you a bunch of money.

There are a number of things that will cause the light to come on, reading the codes will give you a place to start.

I think I find your subject line offensive.

You will need more sensitivity than that to fix a car.

Ever watched somebody bang a computer mouse on the table when they couldn't get the computer to work? Same mentality.

I held back suggestions because of the subject line. I held back any personal thoughts as well. I'd think less of myself if I didn't stand behind Steve on this one, though.

Check Engine Light

On my '97 Taurus Wagon with 212,000 miles and still perfect, Ford tested it on their machine and found nothing wrong. The mechanic told me something as simple as fueling it with the engine running ( i.e. removing the fuel cap ) could trigger it. I just forgot about it 30,000 miles ago.

Vacuum line?

I can't recall the code, but my 97 E320 gave me repeated codes until I found a broken vacuum line in the spark plug valley. Couldn't tell you what it does, steve might, if you appologize to the female mercedes' of the world. (lol)
