amp rating for bosch al165x alternator
 

a friend gave me this bosch reman alternator & said it was 80 amp. The back has the 2 bolts for connecting, but there are no amp markings or part #s other than the bosch label, & search says the 80 amp model is called the al66x. Before I install it I would appreciate if someone could please confirm the amp rating for this al165x and that it is suitable for my car (1988 300ce). Thanks.

The 80 amp alternator has an 8mm output lug. If you use it on a 88 you will have to change the harness or add an eyelet to the old harness. This can not be done with normal crimp connections. You need a heavy lug that can be soldered to the wires.

The normal numbers are AL65X 70amp AL66X 80amp. My info shows AL165X as 80amp but doesn't say what it fits. It looks like the right one but looks aren't the operating criteria.

Click on the URL at the end of this post. To the right of the AL165X Bosch part number is a "PPR PN" -> BOA565. Click on BOA565 and a list of MBs that use this alt. will pop up. You may need the harness mods mentioned by Steve Brotherton.

You can record the 2 Bosch part numbers at this site, then go to Google and key them in. One euro site shows a list of cars that pretty much lines up with what's presented in the URL below.

thanks to both of you for taking the time this weekend to reply. Mike I checked the ppr link last nite, & it seems to indicate a match. Steve, where can I find such a lug connector- Home Depot & my local True Value didn't have one.Can I crimp on the smaller wire, or do I also need to solder a lug or eyelet?

I'm obviously not Steve, but for electrical goodies, try an electric supply house. Maybe even an auto parts store. Crimp-on lugs should be pretty common. It wouldn't hurt to carry the alternator in to try a couple.
