Either that, or you just invented perpetual motion.

Probably not so much the gauge as it is the fuel level sender in the tank being stuck. Otherwise it's the old joke about the guy who bought a new VW Beetle . . . his friends kept adding gas to his tank at night to "juice" the MPG expectations.

I wish somebody would do that to my Mitsubishi

Most likely the sender unit. Have you tried filling the tank up, the fuel might lubricate the sender arm.

The replacing the sender is a DIY job, just need to unplug the old one and remove the big nut that mounts it to the top of the fuel tank. Have a look at Fastlane's prices for the sender.

I dd not catch the model and engine type. I ran into a similar problem with a 240D. Bought the thing from my brother. Took it home and cleaned out the sending unit. It was the best car I ever owned.

Joe - do a search on "fuel sending unit" or "dancing fuel gauge". TONS of info on this subject.

I even contacted VDO about the gauge on the cluster. It's a very common problem with MBs. Sometimes it is a dirty or failed fuel sending unit. It can also be a cracked cold solder joint on the gauge itself (at the dash). Remedies include cleaning or replacing the sending unit, pulling the instrument cluster and re-soldering the fuel gauge solder joints or simply replacing the instrument cluster (very expensive).

Since your gauge is not jumping around, I would guess it is a stuck/dirty sending unit. Good luck!
