My 85 190E developed a loud tapping/knocking noise that seems to come from somewhere under the valve cover in the area of the last cylinder(#1) and is loudest on the intake valve side. I changed the lifters and the rocker arms as well as the camshaft but the noise only got worse after the following oil change. The noise appears once the engine has warmed up. No noise when it is cold and warming up. I talked to the mechanic who rebuilt the cylinder head before I got the car and he suggested it might be piston slab?!. I would very much appreciate any suggestions on how to proceed to get rid of the noise. Thank you very much in advance.

Ditto, I am having a similar noise. Any ideas?

tapping noise on 190E
Hi there,
so far no solution to the problem. You are the only one who has replied to this post so far as well. Looks like nobody has a clue what it could be. Sorry! Maybe you'll have more luck finding a solution. Felix |
Tick, tick, tick noise
Not sure if this engine uses thrust washers over the valve stems, but these are supplied in different sizes. The thrust washers are used on most V8's, hydraulic and solids.
You may want to check the noise with the valve cover off to pinpoint the valve or valves in question. |
Felix,
Since you change the fol: 1.Rocker arms 2.Lifters 3.Camshaft Did you adjust the valve lash properly? Metal expands when heats up. Clauser1 |
