Compatible Cruise amplifers?

I have a 1989 420 SEL and I'd like to get my cruise control working. Mostly likely it is the cruise control amplifer (tempomat). My amp has the part number is 005 545 05 32. I found a 1986 420 SEL amp part number 003 545 07 32 at the junk yard, which is supposed to be working. When I took mine off, the connector end of the boxes looks different, but they do have the same number of pins. The main connector from the car will fit, but the boxes are not the same size and also my old one has resister or a module on the bottom that the 1986 does not have on the bottom.

Does anyone know if I can use the 1986 amp in my 1989?

MB went from specifically formatted control units particular to each car, to universal control units that had programming resistors for variant identification. Now they are back to programmed control units.

It's my guess that if the part is good it will work after a fashion. The reason they redesigned the fool thing so many times was the controllers had many problems. An 86 would be an early version, likely to have the most of those problems.

1986 amp

"it will work after a fashion", I'm not sure what that means?

Could the 1986 amp damage other components?

Some of the problems that I know of were units that shut down after being hot for a period, units that couldn't mantain speed in hills such that the speed related safety function cuts it out: if the car drops more than 3mph the cruise disconnects - some controllers were too sensitive.

It is also posible that MB had a controller or two they wondered about unintended acceleration on. The early controller might exhibit such symptoms. They also had some service bulletins changing the power circuitry for the box. Don't remember which way but on one controller it was necessary to add a power leg.

The control unit you have 005 545 05 32 is still available through VDO. I could sell you one for 250 so they should be easily available from net sources.

Guess what--I may have an extra one. Please see my post at "350SD Cruise Control." Mine doesn't work and I thought I knew the situation well enough to go out and buy an amplifier. I guess it is a dose of humility or reality: nada, still doesn't work. Anyway, I bought one for $155--005 545 05 32--plus $25 core and now I am stuck. I have two. I'm not sure what I'm going to do, but it is likely that both my amplifiers work...
