I am just about to purchase a 260E,W124,never had one before,own a couple
300E's 86-93,not a 260E.What is the major difference between those 2 powertrains,any difference in reliabilty ?

The main differences that I have noticed is the 260 doesn't have headlight wipers and it has manual seats in most cases. Other than that they are the same maybe slightly slower with the slightly smaller motor.

My 260E has the headlight wipers. It does have manual seats. I've had it side by side with a friend's 300E of the same year. They look like identical twins, other than the seats.

Anyone have any thopughts on replacing the seats with electric seats? My only complaint about my workhorse 260 (1989) is the cumbersome reclining and moving of the seats...

Shouldn't be any different. The 260e just uses a smaller version of the engine in the 300e (which is also used in 190e 2.6's.)
