300se fuel screen

Can anyone tell me where the fuel screen is located on a 1990 300se?

The wife's car started acting up lately and today won't rev above 3000RPM.

The pump is suspect. but being as I can't get one until Monday, I might as well look for other problems.

Does it rev higher in neutral and only to 3000 rpm under load? Are you sure it's not an ignition problem?

I'd supect the filter over the pump. I don't know if there is a strainer but if there is one it's in the oulet of the fuel tank. Look in the area above the right rear axle. A hose or two will extend from a large hex nut (~40mm). The strainer is on the other side of the hex nut. You have to drain the fuel tank before removing the strainer. Actually, removing the strainer will drain the fuel tank. It's just a matter of being ready for it.

It may just be the filter. It won't rev above 3000 in neutral either. Actually it starts pinging around 3000.
While following me home, the wife says it was making black smoke under load. It would be pretty embarrassing if it was something choking the air intake.

If it won't rev past 3000 rpm in neutral and it revs to 3000 rpm under load then the problem is not lack of fuel. Black smoke is a symptom of too much fuel, not too little. Something's holding back your engine but it's not lack of fuel.

As Sixto mentioned, you're running rich if you're seeing black smoke.

A good tech might need to scope the secondary side of the ignition circuit.

He might find a weak coil or perhaps a faulty crank position sensor.

I've had a similar problem before, found a clogged CAT. Might be worth checking.

Thanks,

I'm thinking that the cat is the problem. I also think an aftermarket one is the way to go @ $350 as opposed to $1k for OEM.
