602 Diesel questions

Pulled Injectors today on my 93, 124, 300D, w/2.5L diesel engine. What I need to know is what function other than to keep dirt away from the injectors is that black plastic sleeve for, p/n 601-017-0150?
Also the 64 $ question is by the injector hole, toward the outside of the head, there is a small hole / port that goes down into the cylinder head. What the heck is that for? None of my service books mention these two things so???????

WHAT?

Please let me know if and when you find out!

Black plastic sleeve? Do you mean the prechamber?

Are you sure you're not missing a cylinder head bolt?

After I un-torqued the injectors and removed them and was removing the heat shields / seals / crush rings / I think I've covered everything they call them, anyway taking these out with a magnet, there is this black plastic sleeve like part, w/ p/n 601-017-0150 and a marking of 180 Deg. on the outside edge of them. They slide down into the outside edge of the injector chamber before the injector is inserted. Must be a dirt catcher or maybe just a heat shield of some kind.
Also these holes in the cylinder head are just outside of the injector chamber toward the outside of the cylinder head and are quite small and not round, maybe 5 or so mm wide. Looks like some type of a casting mark or whatever.
Will post my findings. On the way to get my jectors re-built.

D Black plactic sleeves are, drum roll, dust shields, duhh, well that is what MB calls them.
Still do not know what the holes are.
Injectors are being cleaned for testing then ?? re-building.

Thanks!
I looked at mine ("Dust Shields"???) as soon as I saw your original
post.Tiny little half moon insets (in the circumference of the injector
opening)in which a little matching extruded rubber flap is aligned to
match up with.
I cannot find the "opening into the head".(Difference vis-a-vis '92-'90)

If you are not already aware, please be advised BEWARE parts or
complete rebuilds from India (I.E. pintles from India when viewed under
microscopic show GROSS defects) NO PRODUCTION Q.C.!

Sorry, I put some info on the cylinder head on my door lock problems page.
Have not recieved the injectors back as of this writing.
:o

Injectors are back. D BIG hold up on replacing them all is I broke one of the dust shields and the whole project is on backorder because they ( MB ) can't find any. A $2 part. SO we wait. If anyone is doing this be EXTRA careful when you take the dust shields out, they are quite brittle and will break easily. Take one of the seals and cover one side of it with electrical tape, trim the tape to fit the seal, put it back in the injector hole and use a vacum to clean out any dirt that will / may fall in there. Do this before you pull the dust shields to keep crap from falling into the combustion chamber. YUK. You may have to hold the seal in there with a long thin screwdriver while sucking out D dirt.
All injectors where quite dirty with heavy ( formations, not sure just what the triminalogy they used for heavy dirt deposits is ???), they cleaned up well and have been re-assembled , adjusted, tested and ready to blow fuel. :D
Everything on hold till MBUSA come thru with the part.
Later.
;)

Anyone out there have an old 602 2.5 turbo Diesel engine, 1990 - 1993 124 chassis car, that is dead and would want to part with a simple little part that Mercedes USA cannot find? The p/n is 602-017-0150, dust shield.
It is a black plastic shield that is inserted into the Injector cavity before the injector is installed. It's a $2 part that has me on hold now for 11 days.
Anyone know what real harm there would be in not using one. That's my next step. Gotta get this ride going. This is kinda nuts.
Have called two dealers in my area, no one stocks this item as far as I know.
Thanks

Well, were still waiting on MB to get us the dust shields so we can install an injector and get this ride going. Hard to believe, a $2 part holding this ride up for 14 days.
IF they don't hurry up I will have a low mileage car, is that bad?

dresserman 10-05-2004 08:04 PM

And waiting.

dresserman 11-11-2004 07:45 PM

Well, NO MORE WAITING. MB isn't making these parts any more, mmmmmmmmmm.
I though a Mfg. er had to make replacement parts for a min. of 10 years after last date parts where used????? O well, this part is not really going to keep the engine from running.
All back together and it only took three tries to get her running. Now she is in storage until late spring.
Then we will most likely have something else to repair. The beat goes on....
Fun, WOW.
