Fuel pump(s) issues (190E)

Hello all.
What are the symptoms of a weak fuel pump? Can they be only a deterioration in performance?
I have a 190E 2.3 (1991, kat), it is not that it runs very bad, but it idles rought and from time to time it even stalls when the A/C is turned on. The fuel pump has become somewhat noisy, as well.

BTW: How many fuel pumps does a 190e 2.3 (8v, kat, 1991) mount?
Thanks!

Do a search there are many other things that could cause those symptons. Do not throw parts at the problem you'll only end up losing money and getting yourself a shot gun to kill the car.
You can have the fuel pump voltage tested, from there you can have the fuel pressure tested, and then the idle control valve, EHA and OVP. This will help pinpoint the problem. You can find almost all the correct values here on the forum. Do a search.

That does not sound like a fuel pump to me. They tend to either run or not run, in my experience. However, if they are getting noisy, don't wait around for a failure.

I concur. I believe you have two pumps. If they are noisy, they are not long for this world. They are asking to be changed, and if you don't do it they have a way of getting even with you. They can start drawing excess current which can take out the fuel pump relay, which by the way is in the main computer on your car. This may not solve your problem, but can lower your over all expense by a grand or so.

Good luvk,
Peter

Sometimes they draw too much current. Consider what M.B.DOC had to say in this thread:

Fuel pump or Fuel p relay? Doc,Benzmac,SteveB

Not sure if the '91 190E has a MAS controller(many functions in one to include fuel pump relay). If so, you can measure the current between pins 1 & 2 using the 10 amp scale of a VOM. I'd use a cheapy and not my pride-n-joy Fluke as these have a max. capacity of 10 amps.

If you don't have a MAS, then use the SEARCH facility to determine where/what pins, etc. for your fuel pump relay.

Just something else to check.
