Exclamation 87 300E Stalls...

Well I just got my car back up and running. I replaced the front right ball joint, new spark plugs and wires, and new tires. I gave it three coats of wax, got the interior all clean and life was good...but...now I'm confronted with a stalling problem. Two days ago it stalled while taking a turn at about 10-15mph, engine shut off, I had no problem restarting the car. It then stalled twice today, both times the car was stopped and at idle speed. First thing i thought was the idle was set too low, but its steady at 750... When it stalled I didnt even notice...no shuttering of the engine trying to stay alive. It just died and it wasnt noticable till I tried to accellerate . And again, no problems restarting the car...If anyone could help me out, I would appreciate it. Thanks in advance.

Replace all the vac line rubber connectors (short bits) and get some new idle control valve hoses if your's are hard (very likely). Clean the idle control valve with carb cleaner by filling it, covering the holes, and shaking until the carb cleaner comes out clean. Remove first, of course.

If it stalls at open throttle instead just while coasting down or under hard brakeing, replace the fuel pump relay.

Thanks a lot for the advice. I'll do some research on the parts you mentioned and hopefully I can solve this problem. Thanks again.

EDIT: I'm having trouble finding the vac. line connectors and idle control valve hoses(on this site). Could you link me to those parts. Thanks.

I am having the same problem myself. I am also having problems with the cruise control dropping out. Found that the speedometer sensor is probably bad. Found this out here:

http://www.germanauto.com/cartip_mercedes.htm

The unit costs between $51 - $61 depending on where you get it. Haven't done anything with this yet as I just found out the probable fix and have yet to order the part.

Good luck ...

Here's a photo of the idle control valve(I hope). I got it off this sites "Fastlane". You can get photos of a lot of parts by going to a parts site and looking them up.

Check Your Overload Protection Relay

i have a 1988 300E that had those same symptoms and i didn't know how to fix the problem,i started throwing parts at it at first until i discovered this fantastic web site......after reading all the threads on this issue i went by process of illimination ,the part that solved the problem the most was the overload protection relay,so i went and replaced the one that happened to be the original in my car (the stamped date on it)and bingoooooo, the car started running like a dream, like nothing happened, thanks to all of you and i would like to pass this on to the next guy with the same problem, and i hope JMH11788 that this is the culprit in your car and that it would stop your nightmare like it did mine.......benzes are great when they run like they should..........but when they have a problem, you either throw a lot of money at it or just come to this site and do a lot of reading and do the work yourself.......thanks again, it was worth my time reading here.
ps:it cost me $60 to fix the problem
